The perception of animals are varied and sometimes confusing. In America, dogs and cats are considered to be part of the family while in certain impoverished countries, they could very well be thought of as the next meal (as horrifying as it may seem). Domesticated or not, however, animals are starting to invade the consciousness of many as some sort of kindred spirit to humanity in general. They share the same world as we do, and in fact, they are also part of the ecosystems that define our various environments. Whether they are domesticated or born in the wild, animals have earned rights of their own; abuse is no longer tolerated, even if the animal in question is being raised for consumption. Animals are to be treated properly.
There is a tense debate over this, of course. Much of animal rights involve vegetarianism, activism for the sake of endangered species, and the rescue of abandoned pets – all of whom come from very different places. Out of all the issues that are niggling at the consciousness of the masses nowadays, this one seems to have the most division, and is thought of as the least pressing. Nevertheless, it is close to the heart of many and is thus included here.
Issues regarding the rights of animals are to be discussed here.
